Homebuilder donates ash benches to new nursery and primary school in Alvaston

A school in Derby has been given two new ash playground benches by local homebuilder Bellway.

Oak Grange Nursery and Primary School in Alvaston is a few minutes’ walk from Bellway’s new The Meadows development and so the company offered to donate and install the two curved benches and pay their cost of £1,200.

Bellway joiner John England and Bellway Trainee Assistant Site Manager Sean Hilton installed the benches at the school on Wednesday 1 May.

Headteacher at Oak Grange Nursery and Primary School, Sarah Coleman, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to Bellway for our new benches. They look beautiful on our new playground and the children have enjoyed testing them out.

“This will provide a quiet seating area for children, where friends can sit and chat and where outdoor learning can take place. Thank you from everyone at Oak Grange Primary School.”

Bellway, which is also building homes nearby at its Holbrook Park development, worked with the school to choose the perfect location for the benches in the main playground near the hedgerow and nature corner.

Ash was chosen as the material because it is very weather resistant, and John and Sean advised the school on how to look after the wood, so it lasts and looks its best.

Bellway is building a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses at The Meadows. Construction work began in 2022 and work is underway on the second phase.

Sales Manager for Bellway East Midlands Heidi Higgins said: “The benches will provide a place for children to sit and enjoy the nature corner for many years to come.

“Oak Grange Nursery and Primary School is near two of our new developments, so people who come to live at The Meadows and Holbrook Park may well be taking their children there in the years ahead. It’s good to know that we have helped create a lovely social space for pupils to enjoy nature and watch the birds, bugs, and butterflies.”

The school, which opened to reception and nursery pupils in September last year, plans to make the benches a main feature in school photographs as the school grows.
