Bellway hands over donations to Burgess Hill Community Food Bank

Boxes of food have been handed over to Burgess Hill Community Food Bank after a collection by Bellway staff.
Bellway’s Southern Counties division, which is building new homes across London, Surrey and Sussex, including at Fallow Wood View in Burgess Hill, set up a collection box at its regional head office in Redhill for the charity.
The donations collected included tinned food, pasta and jam, and Fallow Wood View Sales advisor Lesley O’Callaghan and Bellway Southern Counties Sales Manager Fiona Mitchell visited the food bank premises on Church Walk in Burgess Hill to deliver the items.
One of the trustees of Burgess Hill Community Food Bank, Sharon Benefer, who sources food, said: “Thank you to Bellway for helping us to help those in our community who are struggling.
“Donations like this make us feel that a company cares about local issues and cares about helping their local community as it takes thought and effort and time to collect food on our behalf. We are always keen for companies to be part of the community, to see that there is a need and to help in a very practical way.”
Burgess Hill Community Food Bank was set up in 2013 to provide emergency help, but over the years demand has increased and many people have to use the service for more than just a one-off crisis.
People can use the food bank by getting a voucher from a wide range of agencies in the area including Burgess Hill Town Council Help Point, the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, organisations, churches and charities.
Fiona said: “As part of the delivery of new homes at Fallow Wood View, we are committed to supporting the wider community and are aware that Burgess Hill Community Food Bank makes such an important contribution locally by helping people who are struggling to put food on the table.
“It is heartbreaking to think of anyone going hungry, so we wanted to support the food bank’s work. A big thank you to our staff for organising the collection and donating items that will be used to help others.”
The food bank puts together crates of food from donations given by the public at collection points around the area and from items purchased with its own funds. Each crate contains supplies to cater for two adults or one adult and two children for three days. In 2024, the charity gave out 3,622 crates of food.
The charity is grateful for donations of non-perishable food that are in date including tinned fish, tinned meat, and tinned vegetables, breakfast cereals, tea bags, baked beans, jam and peanut butter.
