More than 40 students from Wiltshire College & University Centre visited the development to find out what goes into creating new homes, taking part in a programme designed to showcase the breadth of opportunities available across the sector.
During the visit, students enjoyed a mix of practical and interactive sessions, including a bricklaying masterclass, talks from Bellway team members working across different disciplines, and a guided tour of the site to see homes at various stages of construction.
A similar event was also held at Bellway’s Flowers Hill Grange development in Brislington, Bristol, extending the opportunity to students across the wider South West.
The events were organised in partnership with The School Outreach Company, which connects schools and colleges with employers to help young people explore pathways into work. Bellway has been working with the organisation across the UK for the past three years.
Maria Mason, Account Director at The School Outreach Company, said: “Our aim is to make sure all students, whatever their background, have access to equal opportunities.
“Events like this help young people engage directly with employers, build confidence and learn about careers they might not otherwise have considered. Bellway really understands the value of this, and the feedback from colleges taking part has been incredibly positive.”
On site, students were split into three groups and rotated through different zones to gain a broad understanding of the industry. Activities included time in the site office learning about commercial, land, planning, technical and site management roles, a practical bricklaying session, and a visit to the sales office to explore careers in sales and customer care.
Rachel Way, Senior Sales Manager at Bellway South West, said: “Encouraging more young people into housebuilding is essential if we’re going to deliver the homes needed in the years ahead.
“This industry offers a huge variety of roles, from office-based careers to hands-on construction jobs, and it was great to share that with students visiting our developments in Chippenham and Bristol. We hope the experience has inspired them to explore a future in construction – and perhaps even a career with Bellway.”
