Pupils at a new school in Coalville are shining bright after a donation of hi-vis vests from local housebuilder Ashberry Homes.

The company, which is building new homes at its Swinfen Vale development in Ellistown as part of the South East Coalville Sustainable Extension, has provided the fluorescent green vests for all 90 pupils at Greenstone Primary, which opened within the wider development in August last year.

The donation, which coincides with International Walk to School Month, will help the pupils to be seen and stay safe while out in the local community and on school trips.

Rebecca Squires, Head of School, said: “We are extremely grateful to Ashberry Homes for their generous donation of hi-vis vests for all of our pupils. As a growing school at the heart of a new community, opportunities to work with local organisations are incredibly valuable. The vests will help keep our children safe when exploring the local area and taking part in educational visits. The donation also supports our commitment to encouraging active travel and helping pupils develop healthy, sustainable habits from an early age.”

Ashberry Homes, which is part of the Bellway Group, is building 188 homes at Swinfen Vale, on land off Beveridge Lane. The wider South East Coalville neighbourhood is planned to deliver around 2,000 homes, community facilities and public open space on land between Hugglescote and Ellistown. The housebuilder is also nearing completion of 164 homes at its Bellway at Hugglescote Grange development within the wider scheme.

Greenstone Primary is a new two-form entry primary school which is set to reach full capacity by 2031-32.

Julie Wild, Sales Manager for Ashberry Homes, said: “Supporting local communities is absolutely integral to our work as a housebuilder so we are pleased to make this donation to Greenstone Primary, a new school which sits right at the heart of the new neighbourhood taking shape here.

“As a company which is committed to sustainable practices, we hope our donation will enable and encourage more pupils to walk or cycle to school, something which has been shown to deliver benefits in terms of physical health, mental wellbeing and the environment.”

International Walk to School Month takes place from 1 to 31 October. Run in the UK by the charity Living Streets, it aims to promote the benefits of walking and wheeling to school.
