Community room brings families together at Springstead Village

Cambridgeshire’s High Sheriff visited a community space which is bringing families together at Springstead Village, near Cambridge.

Francis Burkitt took a tour of Springstead Community Living Room, off Brigettine Way, during a visit to the development on Wednesday (5 August) accompanied by the Rev Karin Voth Harman, the vicar of St Andrew’s Parish Church in Cherry Hinton and Paul Keating, Engineering Manager at Springstead Village.

The community room – which has been provided by Bellway Latimer, the developer behind Springstead Village – is managed by the church team and provides a place for celebrations and gatherings ahead of the building of the permanent community centre planned for later in the construction programme.

The day after the High Sheriff’s visit saw an afternoon of arts, crafts, games and family-friendly activities organised in the community room for families from Springstead Village, Cherry Hinton and Teversham.

Francis said: “Cambridge is growing fast, and it’s incredibly important that the new houses are not only of good quality, but that developments are designed in such a way that they will create vibrant communities for all age groups and will integrate well with their existing neighbours. 

“It was therefore good to hear that Springstead embraces this approach, and to learn about the 40 per cent affordable housing, heat-pumps in every house, play areas, new primary and secondary schools, and walking and cycling links to neighbouring communities.”

The Family Fun Session held on Thursday (6 August) was organised in conjunction with Cambridge City Council and Cambridgeshire Child and Family Centres and also provided an opportunity for residents to share their ideas about the support, services and activities that they think would benefit them and other local families.

Springstead Village is a sustainable new community of 1,200 homes being created on a 138-acre site off Cherry Hinton Road. The project is being delivered by Bellway Latimer, a joint venture between national housebuilder Bellway and Latimer, the development arm of Clarion Group.

Paul Keating, Engineering Manager at Bellway Latimer, said: “The new community at Springstead Village is becoming well established, with around 200 homes now occupied by new residents here.

“The Springstead Community Living Room is playing a significant role in helping the community come together at events such as Thursday’s family fun event. It’s important that people have a place they can bring their families, meet and make friends and the event also gave residents the chance to talk to the local councils about the services and support they might like to see in the area.

“We were also pleased to welcome the High Sheriff to Springstead Village the day before so he could see how this new community is taking shape.”
