Pupils go behind the scenes of new housing development at Lambton Park

Children from Bournmoor Primary School in County Durham enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of a new housing development courtesy of local housebuilder Bellway.

A group of Year 5 and 6 pupils were invited to the nearby Hedworths Green at Lambton Park development, where Bellway is building 145 new homes within the historic Lambton Park Estate.

The tour, led by Bellway Durham’s Head of Construction Daniel Ferguson, gave the children a fascinating insight into how a new homes development is designed, planned and run – and the various job roles involved in delivering it.

The group of 15 pupils were welcomed into the sales office for a brief introduction before being kitted out in hard hats and hi-vis vests and heading out onto the site. The children saw completed properties, including the five-bedroom Woodstone showhome, as well as homes still under construction, and the all-important health and safety signage which is displayed across the site.

Laura Snowdon, who accompanied the children on the visit with class teacher Oliver Seaton, said: “Thank you to Bellway for an excellent site visit to their Hedworths Green at Lambton Park development. Our Year 5 and 6 pupils gained valuable insight into the construction industry and enjoyed learning about the skills and careers involved in creating new homes and communities. 

“Dan was very welcoming, engaging and inspiring, making it such a valuable experience for our pupils. It is wonderful for children to see the development first hand so we would like to thank everyone involved for making it such a worthwhile experience.”

Daniel said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome staff and pupils from Bournmoor Primary School to our Hedworths Green at Lambton Park development.

“We believe it is important to build positive relationships with the local communities where we build and the school is situated just a mile from the development. We hope this visit gave the children a greater understanding of the work involved in delivering new homes.

“The pupils were extremely enthusiastic and eager to ask questions which was great to see. It would be nice to think that the visit may have inspired some of them to think about potentially choosing a career in the industry when they get older.”
