Climate change policy

Bellway recognises the significant effect carbon emissions have on the climate and as a responsible organisation we are committed to ensuring we play our role in delivering carbon reductions and planning for a sustainable future. As part of our Better with Bellway sustainability strategy, we worked with the Carbon Trust to set two science-based targets (SBTs):

  • Bellway commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 46% by July 2030 from a 2019 base year, aligned to the 1.5°C pathway.
  • Bellway commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions by 55% per square metre of completed floor area by July 2030 from a 2019 base year, aligned to the well below 2°C pathway using the physical intensity target criteria (cumulative physical intensity reduction aligned with 7% year-on-year reduction and capping absolute emissions in the base year).

We measure our carbon footprint based on the UK Government’s Environmental Reporting Guidelines (2013) and the latest emission factors from the Government’s GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting. We have both our Scope 1 & 2 and our Scope 3 footprints independently verified to a ‘limited assurance level’ by The Carbon Trust. For Scope 1 & 2 all emissions are included apart from emissions from site-based combined heat and power units for which the Group does not have operational control.

We continue to communicate our carbon performance to our stakeholders, both within our annual report and accounts and through our participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
