Bellway celebrates 80th anniversary of VE Day at development in Chelmsford
Bellway hosted a celebration at a Chelmsford development to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The event took place at Beaulieu Grange, where Bellway is building 194 homes on land off Remembrance Way, on Saturday 3 May.
Visitors gathered to commemorate Victory in Europe Day, which marked the end of the Second World War in Europe on 8 May 1945, when the Allies accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany.
Bellway hired an ice cream van to provide free ice cream and iced lollies to visitors and sales staff throughout the day.
Laura Trigg, Sales Manager at Bellway Essex, said: “Fostering community spirit is integral to our ethos as a company and the major anniversary of this momentous date in our nation’s history was the perfect opportunity to bring people together for a day of celebration.
“It was a pleasure to welcome visitors to Beaulieu Grange for this event and I’m grateful to everyone who came along and helped make it an enjoyable and memorable occasion.”
Last November, Beaulieu Grange was one of four locations chosen by Chelmsford Garden Community Council to host a ‘Tommy’ figure - so-called after the nickname for a soldier in the British Army – to mark Remembrance Sunday.
Three other ‘Tommy’ figures were erected at the Community Gardens in Taylor View, in front of Beaulieu Community Centre, off Centenary Avenue, and at Boleyn Gardens, off Beaulieu Boulevard.
To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the Government has organised four days of celebrations which will run from Monday 5 to Thursday 8 May. Planned events include a military procession and flypast in central London and 2,500 beacons being lit across the UK.
