Bellway donates £1,000 to Royal British Legion as part of VE Day celebrations
The Consett and District branch of the Royal British Legion has received a £1,000 donation from housebuilder Bellway.
The money was donated as part of Bellway’s celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which also included an event at its Hedworths Green at Lambton Park development near Chester-le-Street.
Bunting and balloons set the scene for the event, which took place on Saturday 3 May and included afternoon tea style refreshments for all those who attended.
Royal British Legion Branch secretary Andrew Gailes said: “On behalf of Consett & District Royal British Legion, I would like to thank you for the cheque for £1000. As we recognise the historic occasion of VE80, the Consett & District Branch will use your generous donation to continue supporting Veterans in the local community.”
The celebrations were well attended, with residents of the development and members of the wider community coming together to join in.
Head of Sales at Bellway Durham, Christie Edge, said: “Our VE Day 80th anniversary party was a wonderful occasion. Marking significant moments in our history is an important part of building a community and this event was a great way of bringing local residents together. We hope everyone enjoyed having afternoon tea and getting to know each other.
“Making a donation to support the RBL was, we felt, a practical way to further mark the anniversary. We hope this money helps the Legion’s important work supporting serving and former members of the Armed Forces and their families.”
