Bellway donation helps Romsley Scout Group stage fundraising Summer Fayre

A local housebuilder helped lay the foundations which enabled Romsley Scouts to raise £1,550 at its annual Summer Fayre.

Bellway West Midlands, which is building new homes at Harvino on the former Blue Bird Toffee factory site in nearby Hunnington, donated £250 to enable the group to buy barbecue food and prizes.

The event, held at the playing field at Romsley Scout Centre in St Kenelm’s Road, raised funds which will go towards buying equipment, outdoor activities and paying for camps for the members of the Scout Group, which has over 90 children and young people aged from six upwards, giving them fun, adventure and life skills.

The event featured games with prizes, including the chance to win a giant teddy bear, and refreshments including a barbecue, bar, homemade cream teas and ice-creams.

Andy Shepherd, Lead Group Volunteer at Romsley St Kenelm’s Scout Group, said: “The Summer Fayre was a fantastic success with a wonderful turnout from the local community on the day. We would like to thank Bellway for making a donation to help sponsor the event. The contribution made a huge difference because it helped cover the expenses of putting the fayre on, which means that the amount of money we have raised to help us buy equipment is bigger.

“This is the second year in a row that Bellway has helped us and It is good to see that such a large and prestigious company is willing to get involved in the local community and to make a real difference.”

The Scout Group includes Beavers, Cubs and Scouts sections. Scouting has a long history in the village going back to 1937, and the current group began in 1966. Its Scout Centre was purpose built for them in 1999 and is not only used for the work of the Scout Group but also other community groups, providing activities for all ages, from babies to senior citizens.

Angela Nurse, Sales Manager at Bellway West Midlands, said: “When the Romsley Scout Group approached us to see if we could help with a donation towards funding this year’s fundraising summer fayre, it was a pleasure to be able to make a contribution. It is lovely to have an ongoing relationship with the group.

“It is good to know that our donation was used to buy food and prizes to ensure that the group could maximise the money raised at an event which brought everyone together.”

Bellway is building 86 homes at Harvino, as part of the regeneration of the former toffee factory site off Bromsgrove Road. The factory closed in 1998, after more than 70 years of sweet production.
