Bellway helps primary school in Trowbridge create calm sensory room for pupils
Bellway has donated £400 to help a Trowbridge primary school create a new sensory room to give pupils a calm space if they need to take a break from lessons.
Hilperton C of E Primary School, in Newleaze, is transforming a disused room next to its library into ‘The Nest’, a dual purpose nurture and sensory room for children to reflect and have time to talk.
The donation from Bellway South West – which is building new homes at its Weavers Meadow development about a mile away from the school – will be used to buy paint, blinds, soft furnishings and sensory equipment for the new room.
Anna Edmund, headteacher at Hilperton C of E Primary School, said: “We want to create ‘The Nest’ as a place for children to use to help their social and emotional wellbeing during their time here at school.
“We need to redecorate the room and fill it with soft furnishings and sensory equipment to help provide a calm, safe space for our children to express themselves and explore how to regulate their emotions. One of our playworkers has kindly offered to paint a relaxing mural on one of the walls to help soften the space and make it more engaging.
“We are proud to have adopted Thrive, a recognised programme designed to embed social and emotional learning across the school by providing our staff with the tools and training to support mental health and behaviour. ‘The Nest’ is testament to our desire to nurture and protect the wellbeing of our children.
“We are extremely grateful to Bellway for their kind donation. It really will make a big difference and help us achieve our aim and complete the project.”
Christel Hawkins, Sales Manager at Bellway South West, said: “When we were contacted by Hilperton C of E Primary School Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA) we were impressed by their plans to transform an empty room into a sensory space for the pupils.
“As well as building new homes in Trowbridge, we are also keen to reach out and forge new relationships with local organisations. This school is very much at the heart of the community and we are happy to hear that our donation will help it deliver ‘The Nest’, which will become an important new facility providing a calming safe space for children.”
