Welsh soprano Jessica Robinson was among the star attractions at this year’s Llandaff Cathedral Festival.

Her appearance was part-funded by local housebuilder Bellway, which made a donation towards the running of the event.

Jessica, who in 2023 became the first Welsh finalist of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 20 years, sang as part of the Voices of Wales concert at the cathedral on day two of the festival.

The five-day event, which ran from Wednesday 2 to Sunday 6 July, featured classical music concerts, panel discussions, a lecture on the work of artist JMW Turner, a session of late-night lute songs, an art workshop and a family fun day with games and a craft fayre.

On the third day of the festival, the seven-piece band Everything Under the Sun performed Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here LP in full to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album’s release. The band also performed the superstar group’s Dark Side of the Moon album. During the two-hour show, the band used the cathedral’s historic pipe organ and a laser show displayed the building’s architecture in a new light.

Festival organiser Olivia Moore, who is Head of Marketing and Events at Llandaff Cathedral, said: “We are extremely pleased to have secured the support of Bellway and the generous donation helped us pay to have the wonderful soprano Jessica Robinson to wow our audience.

“This is the fourth year of the festival in its current form after it was revived following a period when it fell out of favour and was not staged. We are determined to make it relevant for today so it is essential that we get the financial backing of local businesses such as Bellway.

“This festival helps celebrate the best of the arts in Cardiff and Wales and is about nurturing local talent. It is also about bringing the community together in joy and inviting the people of Cardiff into the cathedral.”

Any profits from the festival are used to fund the organisation of events throughout the year which include the monthly Coffee Concert held at Llandaff Parish Hall. This regular event offers local people the chance to get together in a warm space and to share coffee and cake.

Rhodri Davies, Sales Manager at Bellway Wales, said: “The Llandaff Cathedral Festival is an incredible event which celebrates the huge contribution that Wales has made - and continues to make - to the arts.

“We are proud to support this year’s festival and delighted that our contribution helped to secure an appearance by the fantastic singer Jessica Robinson. This festival has quickly re-established itself as an important fixture in Cardiff’s social calendar and the organisers deserve a huge amount of credit for reviving the event and making it the success it is today.”
