Bellway site manager in Cherry Hinton wins coveted industry award

The site manager at the Springstead Village development in Cherry Hinton, on the edge of Cambridge, has been recognised for the quality of his work with a coveted national award.

Bellway Site Manager George Robertson, 65, from Peterborough, has secured a Quality Award in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) annual Pride in the Job competition.

He was among only 450 winners selected from a pool of more than 8,000 site managers whose developments have been inspected by the NHBC over the past year, placing him among an elite group within the industry.

It is his sixth Quality Award, and he has also previously won a Seal of Excellence, which is the next level of the competition.

This year marks 40 years since George first became a site manager. He is also an experienced contracts manager but seven years ago he decided to return to site management to be more directly involved on-site.

He joined Bellway three years ago specifically to work on the landmark Springstead Village development, which is a joint venture between Bellway and Latimer, the development arm of Clarion Group.

When he started working on the development, he pledged that he would win a Quality Award for the site, which he did last year. And with that done he promised to do it again, which he has also now achieved.

“Everybody is over the moon,” he said. “They are all really delighted because it reflects so well on everybody. The whole team shares this accolade, it’s not all about me. This is not possible without a team.

“I drummed it into everyone that this will be a prize-winning site. Everybody has bought into that, and this award confirms how well the team is doing. We have a fantastic team here and my assistant site manager Marc Longhurst has been a fantastic source of support.”

The Pride in the Job awards involve a rigorous process including spot checks on the day-to-day running of a site. Each site manager is assessed across six key areas which are consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.

George and the other Quality Award winners will go forward to the next stage of the competition – the NHBC’s Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards, which will be announced this autumn.

Ulrich van Eck, Project Director for the Bellway Latimer joint venture, said: “As you can see from the number of sites that are judged nationally, winning this award is no mean feat. The NHBC Quality Award is recognition of a job very well done and is universally respected throughout the construction industry as a mark of distinction.

“George and his site team should be incredibly proud of this achievement. It is a real testament to their hard work, commitment and attention to detail, not to mention the extremely high standards that we set for ourselves.”

Bellway is building more than 1,000 homes on 138 acres that was once part of the Cambridge Airport site. They will range from one-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom detached houses.
