Bellway site managers in Wales win coveted industry awards
Site managers in Bellway’s Wales division have been recognised for the quality of their work with coveted national awards.
The two site managers from the Wales division, which is based in Cardiff, have secured Quality Awards in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) annual Pride in the Job competition.
They are Paul Oakley at Longwood Grange, in Cardiff, and Mark Symonds at Alder Grove, in Newport.
They were among only 450 winners selected from a pool of more than 8,000 site managers whose developments have been inspected by the NHBC over the past year, placing them among an elite group within the industry. The NHBC awarded 19 Quality Awards in Wales this year.
This is the 22nd Pride in the Job award for Paul. As well as Quality Awards he has previously been awarded eight Seal of Excellence awards and a Regional Award for Wales in the competition. Three of his Seals of Excellence were for his current site at Longwood Grange.
Paul, 52, from Taff’s Well, near Cardiff, said: “I am pleased to be awarded another NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award. This is my eighth award for Longwood Grange since returning to Bellway in 2021.
“I am passionate about continually raising the standards at Longwood Grange and producing homes that satisfy customers’ expectations.”
Mark, 54, from Abergavenny, has been a site manager for 30 years. This is his 10th Quality Award, and he has previously received two Seal of Excellence awards.
He said: “I am very proud of this. It’s such a difficult competition. I was quietly confident, but I’ve had it in the past when I haven’t won. I knew our site was good, but you don’t know what the competition are doing. So, to see that email come through was great. This site is looking very sharp and it’s a lot of work, but that’s the reward.
“Job satisfaction for me is happy customers and finishing developments to the best of my ability.”
All the winners will go forward to the next stage of the competition – the NHBC’s Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards, which will be announced this autumn.
The Pride in the Job awards involve a rigorous process including spot checks on the day-to-day running of a site. Each site manager is assessed across six key areas which are consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.
James Morgan, Construction Manager for Bellway Wales, said: “As you can see from the number of sites that are judged nationally, winning this award is no mean feat. The NHBC Quality Award is recognition of a job very well done and is universally respected throughout the construction industry as a mark of distinction.
“At Bellway we are constantly striving for excellence and seeking to maintain the highest of standards. Utilising our internal communications platform Pathway, successful Bellway site managers have been sharing advice and best practice with their colleagues and this has resulted in an improved performance across the business.
“I would like to congratulate Paul and Mark and their excellent site teams for this achievement and wish them all the best in the next stage of the competition later this year.”
