Bellway sponsors illuminated street procession as part of Maldon Carnival celebrations

Bellway has made a contribution to help fund the staging of an illuminated street procession of floats which will be part of the Maldon Carnival celebrations.

The company, which is building new homes at Westcombe Park in the town, has donated £500 to the committee organising the carnival celebrations which are being held in August and October.

To celebrate the 130th anniversary of the carnival, the committee has decided to stage a month of events in August before a grand finale on Saturday 4 October, when an illuminated procession will make its way through the streets of Maldon.

Carol Banks, a member of the Maldon Carnival Committee, said: “For the first time in the long history of the Maldon Carnival there will be an illuminated procession, so we are very excited about that. There will be a number of floats on the backs of lorries which will be illuminated and will light up the streets of the town.

“To mark the 130th anniversary we are expanding the normal carnival week of events into a month of activities throughout August.

Maldon Carnival is a cherished tradition which brings together both local residents and visitors to enjoy a vibrant celebration of community. The Bellway contribution will enable us to have more money to try to make these events as successful as possible.”

The August events include a baby show, a car treasure hunt, a fish and chips quiz night, a teddy bears picnic and a sports day.

Samantha Norman, Sales Manager for Bellway Thames Gateway, said: “Maldon Carnival has been going for 130 years and it’s wonderful to be able to support this heritage going forward.

“It is great that our contribution will help the committee put on a month of events and a spectacular-sounding street procession in October. It sounds like this year’s Maldon Carnival will be one that will live long in the memory of people in the town.”
