Bellway supports Relay For Life Bury St Edmunds for second year

Housebuilder Bellway is to sponsor a popular Cancer Research UK fundraising race in Bury St Edmunds for the second year running.

Relay For Life Bury St Edmunds is a 24-hour event which will start at noon on Saturday 5 July in Nowton Park.

Bellway, which is building new homes at the Bronze Fields development in the town, has donated £500 towards the running of this year’s event after making a similar contribution in 2024.

The festival centres around a relay where team members take turns completing an activity, whether that be walking laps of a track, through a park or some other challenge. The event also includes games and music from local performers. At sunset, there is a Candle of Hope ceremony where candles are carefully lit with each one honouring a life touched by cancer.

Last year, millions of people took part in thousands of Relay For Life events worldwide and raised more than £1million.

David Cianciola, co-event chair for Relay For Life Bury St Edmunds, said: “We are extremely grateful to Bellway for this generous donation which we will use to pay for the toilet facilities on the day. By covering this necessary cost, it means that we will be able to concentrate on raising as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK.

“Last year we had about 250 people turn up at Relay For Life Bury St Edmunds and we raised £43,000. This fabulous amount put us through the magical £500,000 barrier as the total we have raised since we launched this local event in 2009.

“Without the financial support of local businesses like Bellway, who also gave us £500 last year, we would not have been able to reach that incredible total. This support is invaluable and gives us the confidence to know that we can look forward to staging this important fundraising event year after year in our bid to fund research that might, one day, find a cure for cancer.”

Bellway adopted Cancer Research UK as its designated national charity in 2016. Since then, Bellway staff throughout the country have focused their fundraising efforts on supporting the charity and set a target of hitting £4 million by the end of 2024. The company reached that total and has now set a new target of raising £5 million by the end of 2025.

Mia Roussos, Sales Director at Bellway Eastern Counties, said: “As a company we are very proud of our ongoing affiliation with Cancer Research UK. Our donation towards this year’s Relay For Life Bury St Edmunds not only provides financial assistance for an important event within the local community but also supports our wider aim of raising vital funds for our nominated national charity.

“This year’s event promises to be another fantastic occasion where hundreds of people from across the region get together to have fun and do their bit in the fight against cancer.” Bellway Eastern Counties is building 198 homes at Bronze Fields, off Marham Parkway.
