Community invited to create nature-inspired public artwork at Springstead Village

A willow-weaving workshop held as part of an arts event at Springstead Village in Cherry Hinton helped to create the first of a series of nature-inspired public artworks planned across the new neighbourhood.
Around 50 people took part in the event held on Friday and Saturday (October 31 and November 1), with autumnal arts and crafts activities also organised at the development’s community building.
The willow-weaving workshop was led by Tom Kendall from Wayward, the lead artists at the development, with participants helping to add to the Gateway sculpture which is formed by large vertical timbers already in place at the entrance to the site.
Tom also did a spooky story reading at dusk at the stile which has recently been installed as part of the wider art project.
Project Director for the Bellway Latimer joint venture Ulrich van Eck said: “Community collaboration and participation lie at the heart of the ethos of Springstead Village, and this is reflected in the public artworks which have been commissioned for this new community.
“The willow-weaving workshop gave people the opportunity to leave their artistic mark on the development, and connects them to the hedge-laying traditions of Cambridgeshire’s farming community.
“It was an exciting way to bring people together, to create a living artwork which as it grows will create homes for wildlife and will be enjoyed by residents here for years to come.”
A second weekend of willow-weaving workshops is also planned for this weekend from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 November.
The wider Springstead Village project is bringing 1,200 all-electric homes to Cherry Hinton on a 138-acre site that was once part of Cambridge Airport. It is the result of a major collaboration between homebuilder Bellway and the development arm of Clarion Housing Group, Latimer.
