Councillors approve plans for 292 new homes and local centre at Springstead Village in Cherry Hinton
Plans to build homes, shops and community facilities at a new development in Cherry Hinton have won the backing of Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council.
Bellway Latimer is set to provide a new community hub, café, food store and shops, along with 292 homes at Springstead Village. New green spaces with parks and allotments are also included in the plans.
The joint planning committee of the two local authorities voted to approve the plans on Wednesday (20 August).
Springstead Village is a collaboration between homebuilder Bellway and Latimer, the development arm of Clarion Housing Group. The development will bring 1,200 new homes to the area on a 138-acre site which was previously part of Cambridge Airport.
Ulrich van Eck, Project Director for Bellway Latimer, said: “These plans will inform a key stage of the development by bringing forward community facilities that will form the heart of Springstead Village.
“Before we put together these detailed designs, we carried out extensive consultation with the community and the planning authorities. We are pleased that the committee has given its support to our proposals and look forward to starting work on this next stage of Springstead Village.”
The plans include 175 homes for private sale and 117 affordable homes. The designs show the community hub and café building, three shops and a food store located around a market square. The allotments will sit alongside a clubhouse and there will be two neighbourhood parks, along with a greenway that extends to nearby March Lane.
Ulrich said: “Springstead Village already feels like an established community. The first residents moved in just over a year ago and 122 homes are now occupied.
“We will continue to work closely with people living in and around Cherry Hinton as the next stages of the development take shape.”
There is currently a selection of one and two-bedroom apartments, two-bedroom maisonettes and two, three and four-bedroom houses available to reserve at Springstead Village, with prices starting from £299,995.
