Exceptional attention to detail at Hedworths Green helps Bellway site manager win coveted Quality Award

A Bellway site manager has won a prestigious building award for the quality of his work on a bespoke development in a historic country estate in County Durham.

Anthony Church, 36, who started off in construction as a 17-year-old apprentice joiner, has secured a Quality Award in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) annual Pride in the Job competition for his work at Hedworths Green at Lambton Park, near Chester-le-Street.

He was among only 450 winners selected from a pool of more than 8,000 site managers whose developments have been inspected by the NHBC over the past year, placing him among an elite group within the industry.

This is the second time that Anthony has won an NHBC Quality Award, after being given the accolade for his work at Bellway’s Abbey Heights development in Callerton, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in 2022.

Anthony, who lives in Newton Aycliffe, said: “I am proud of how far I have come and much of that is due to my determination and sheer hard work but also an ability to communicate and lead a team. I am over the moon to be given this second Quality Award because they are difficult to win and it speaks of my consistency across two developments with two different teams.

“Ably supported by my assistant site manager Daniel Brown, I set and maintain exceptionally high standards and make no apologies for this. Hedworths Green at Lambton Park is a bespoke site and demands incredible attention to detail. We are delivering 145 new homes in a stunning historic country estate and there are 87 different elevations involved in the designs for the properties.

“This unusual level of construction design means that we have to be on the ball at all times to ensure that the trades people on site fully understand what is required of them plot by plot. As with any site, we need to make sure that we get it right first time and that calls for good communication and a willingness for everyone to buy into the project.

“Teamwork is the key to getting it right and it is great to lead a group of people who are on board with my plan to deliver exceptional properties. It is hard work but I relish it and I know that senior management at Bellway are fully supportive of me and appreciate my efforts and ability to deliver success.

“Ultimately, our aim is to hand over the best possible quality home to our customers and this award reflects that we are achieving this.”

The Pride in the Job awards involve a rigorous process including spot checks on the day-to-day running of a site. Each site manager is assessed across six key areas which are consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.

Anthony and the other Quality Award winners will go forward to the next stage of the competition – the NHBC’s Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards, which will be announced this autumn.

Dan Ferguson, Head of Construction for Bellway Durham, said: “As you can see from the number of sites that are judged nationally, winning this award is no mean feat. The NHBC Quality Award is recognition of a job very well done and is universally respected throughout the construction industry as a mark of distinction.

“Anthony and his site team should be incredibly proud of this achievement. It is a real testament to their hard work, commitment and attention to detail not to mention the extremely high standards that we set for ourselves throughout the business.”
