Local school pupil designs welcome card for new residents at Kennett Garden Village

A drawing by a primary school pupil has been chosen to feature on cards welcoming new residents to a development in Kennett Garden Village.

The card was created after Bellway, which is building new homes at The Ferns at Kennett Garden Village, challenged children at Kennett Primary School to come up with designs.

Staff and pupils from the Cambridgeshire school moved into a new purpose-built building in November.  It was a key part of the vision for Kennett Garden Village that a state-of-the-art new school building be provided for the community early in the programme and in 2020 the Dane Hill Estate committed to spend £4.5 million on the project.  After purchasing the site, Bellway made the contribution on behalf of the Estate.

Ivy’s drawing, which features a house with moving boxes outside and removal van, was chosen as the winner from 22 entries in the card design competition.

Construction Manager Jamie Wright, Project Manager Paul Temple, and Sales Manager Marrissa Gale, all from Bellway Eastern Counties, visited the school to show Ivy the cards and to present her with a £50 Argos voucher.

Scott Horsley, headteacher at Kennett Primary School, said: “The children were very excited when we told them about the Bellway welcome card challenge. We used the competition as an opportunity to encourage the children to think about the different ways to reach out to people and welcome others to our growing community.

“We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school, playing an active role in the local community. The artwork that the children produced was inspired and Ivy was a worthy winner. It was very generous of Bellway to present Ivy with a £50 gift voucher.”

Marrissa said: “As part of the planning agreement for The Ferns at Kennett Garden Village, Bellway made a very significant contribution to the funding of the new Kennett Primary School. so we feel a special affinity with the staff and pupils there.

“We thought it would be a lovely touch to print a card to welcome our new residents to this development and who better to create the design than a budding artist from the local primary school. The colourful and imaginative designs were a credit to the children, and it was very tough task to choose a winner.

“In the end, we chose Ivy’s design which is charming and evokes the fun and sense of adventure that comes with moving into a new home. We were happy to visit the school to show her the card we had printed with her drawing and to give her a £50 voucher.”

Kennett Garden Village is a sustainable, high-quality neighbourhood which has been planned to include 500 homes as well as large areas of green open space and community infrastructure. Bellway Eastern Counties is building 160 homes within The Ferns at Kennett Garden Village, while Ashberry Homes, which is part of the Bellway Group, is delivering 164 homes at Lark’s Place at Kennett Garden Village.
