Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough visits Bellway development at Kennett Garden Village

The Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has visited Bellway’s development at Kennett Garden Village to find out more about how the housebuilder is delivering sustainable new homes and improving facilities for the local area.
Bellway Regional Managing Director Phil Standen and Project Manager Paul Temple welcomed Mayor Paul Bristow and Deputy Mayor Anna Bailey to the site, off Station Road in Kennett, as well as representatives from the Kennett Community Land Trust (KCLT) which was involved in planning the garden village project, and will own and manage some of the affordable homes planned.
Kennett Garden Village is a sustainable, high-quality neighbourhood which has been planned to include 500 homes. In the first residential phase, Bellway’s Eastern Counties division is building 160 new homes at The Ferns at Kennett Garden Village.
The dignitaries were given a tour of the development, which includes a new building for Kennett Primary School funded by developer contributions, with Bellway investing £4.5 million into the project. The school moved into the new building – featuring eight classrooms, each with their own outside space, a dedicated science, technology, engineering and mathematics space, playing fields and a staff car park – in November 2024.
Mayor Paul Bristow said: “Kennett Garden Village is testament to the Community Land Trust model which delivers great new communities and supports local people continuing to live in the places they call home.
“Infrastructure-led developments like this are exactly what is needed to support economic growth in our region. The Kennett Primary School will relieve pressure on existing schools and create thriving communities for young families.
“It is this bigger picture thinking that will really make a difference in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.”
Bellway’s Paul Temple said: “It was great to be able to welcome the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, and representatives of Kennett Community Land Trust to The Ferns at Kennett Garden Village. We were able to give them a tour of the development and to show them the new school and the new playground, which are both open on the site.
“We are very proud that Bellway is playing a major role in the Kennett Garden Village project. As well as providing funding for new facilities, such as the new school building, we are also delivering much-needed private housing and affordable properties which will allow local people to stay in the area.
“The development is also leading the way in terms of sustainability, with homes heated by electric air source heat pumps, and biodiversity prioritised within the landscaping design to create new habitats for wildlife.”
