Parley First School pupils find out about working in construction at Kingsmere Park
Pupils from Parley First School in Ferndown had the chance to visit Bellway’s construction site at Kingsmere Park on Friday 16 May.
The children, aged between six and nine, were invited to the site in West Parley to see the homes which are being built there.
Bellway also donated £400 to the school, which will be spent on new playground equipment for its construction zone and theatre zone.
Headteacher John Bagwell, who went with the pupils on the day along with assistant teachers Naomi Inge and Charlotte Reeve, thanked Bellway for its support.
He said: “I’m a big believer in primary careers advice for children and giving them the opportunity to see what jobs are out there. And there are so many different types of jobs in homebuilding – such as electricians, plumbers, interior designers, architects, gardeners, and sales teams.
“We had some really good questions from the children. One of them asked about where the animals go when homes are built and they heard about the hedgehog holes that they put in the fences.
“It was a very positive visit, and the children came back feeling very positive about it and knowing more about the process of homebuilding.
“Visits like this give a purpose to the learning the children do in school – it connects it to the outside world. And it’s a great opportunity for them to develop social skills. It’s also about the school developing positive partnerships for the future.”
The pupils were shown around a ‘House to Home’ plot at the site, which Bellway uses to show buyers what goes into building their home before it is finished and ready to move into. The children saw where the wires and pipes are fitted, and the insulation put in before the walls are finished and plastered.
The pupils also enjoyed visiting a finished showhome to see what the houses look like when they are complete.
Bellway Wessex sales manager, Emily Putnam, said: “Showing young people all the different aspects of the homebuilding process is a great way to get them thinking about the buildings they live in.
“We hope that they enjoyed seeing what goes on behind the scenes and what’s underneath the walls in a finished home. And if Friday’s visit sparks their interest in the possibility of a career in construction when they are older, then all the better.
“Parley First School is only around a mile and a half away from Kingsmere Park, so we were keen to support it. We were very happy to donate £400 to the school and we hope the children enjoy the improvements to the school playground that this money will contribute to.”
