Pupils learn about biodiversity on visit to King George’s Vale in Cuffley

Pupils from Cuffley School learned about biodiversity when they visited Bellway’s King George’s Vale development in the village.

The housebuilder hosted a total of 60 pupils, aged seven and eight, at the site, off Northaw Road East.

The youngsters, who visited in four separate groups, were given clip boards and handed hi-vis jackets and hard hats to wear during their visit to the site.

Prior to the visits, the children were given work sheets, containing five photographs, so that they could try to spot the items at the development. The schoolchildren also helped sow seeds on grassed areas and spread mulch to stop weeds growing.

The Bellway team explained the range of biodiversity measures being undertaken at King George’s Vale, including the planting of new trees and native hedgerow, the creation of wildflower and wetland areas, and the installation of bat and bird boxes.

Wendy Wing, Headteacher at Cuffley School, said: “Year 3 enjoyed visiting our neighbours at Bellway’s King George's Vale development. They learnt about sustainable housing developments and the reasons that this is so important to the local wildlife and community.

“The Bellway team were incredible hosts. The children left with individual goody bags, as well as bringing back bird boxes and a bug hotel for our grounds. Thank you to everyone involved.”

Steve Cutting, Contracts Manager at Bellway North London, said: “Biodiversity is one of our key priorities of Bellway’s sustainability strategy and we are committed to ensuring that we enhance wildlife habitats at our developments above and beyond the requirements of legislation.

“We are providing a range of new habitats to support local wildlife at King George’s Vale, planting trees and hedgerows, creating ponds and meadow areas and providing nesting sites for birds and roosting spots for bats.

“It was great to be able to tell the pupils all about our plans and show the measures which can be taken to support the environment.

“Children are the future guardians of our world and it was reassuring to see the youngsters so engaged and so keen to learn how to help nature.

“We hope the visit helps support their learning about biodiversity in school.”
