Traditional summer fete helps good causes at Trimley St Martin in Suffolk

Villagers in Trimley St Martin enjoyed a traditional summer fete at the weekend and helped raise funds for two local good causes.

The event, at Trimley Sports and Social Club on Saturday 5 July, was sponsored by Bellway, which is building new homes at Kingsfleet Park in the village. The company donated £750 towards the running costs of the fete.

Money raised by the event will help two causes – the fund to build an extension to Trimley St Martin Memorial Hall and Felixstowe Lifeboat. The independent lifeboat charity was chosen by public vote via a poll on the parish council’s Facebook page.

This is the first community summer fete to be organised by volunteers from Trimley St Martin Parish Council and Trimley Sports and Social Club. The Lions Club of Felixstowe also helped with running the event.

Chairman of Trimley St Martin Parish Council Yvonne Smart said: “Local companies recognising and supporting local community events in this way means a great deal so, thank you Bellway. Such funding is truly welcomed toward making this new event possible.”

The event was also supported by more than £700 from Suffolk County Councillor Stuart Bird’s Locality Budget.

More than 400 people visited the fete. Among the attractions were a circus skills workshop, donkey rides, beat the goalie, a coconut shy and other traditional games. There were stalls, food stands, a barbecue, and a visit from Ipswich Town Football Club mascot, Crazee.

In the arena visitors were able to see displays from the Border Control dogs unit, and live music including a performance by Trimley St Mary Primary School’s singing group.

Bellway Essex Sales Manager Emma Hawkins said: “Sponsoring this new community event is the perfect way for Bellway to support the village. Not only was the summer fete an enjoyable, traditional occasion for people of all ages to enjoy, but it has raised money for these two important funds.

“We are adding to the local community with our new homes at Kingsfleet Park and so we are keen to do what we can to help the neighbourhood, bring people together, and give backing to hard-working volunteers and organisations in the area.”
