A year of milestones and achievements celebrated at Springstead Village development in Cherry Hinton
The team behind an award-winning sustainable neighbourhood taking shape on the edge of Cambridge hosted a celebration to mark a year of milestones and achievements since the first residents moved in.
Springstead Village in Cherry Hinton is set to bring 1,200 new all-electric homes – heated with air source heat pumps – to a 138-acre site that was once part of Cambridge Airport. The project is a collaboration between housebuilder Bellway and the development arm of Clarion Housing Group, Latimer.
A year ago, the first six households received the keys to their new homes and since then a further 99 homes have been occupied.
Bellway Latimer hosted an anniversary celebration at the sales centre on Saturday 21 June to give residents an opportunity to get together with their neighbours and enjoy some pizza. Potential buyers who wanted to find out more about the development also attended the event.
Ulrich van Eck, Project Director for the Bellway Latimer joint venture, said: “It has been an incredible 12 months at Springstead Village in so many ways. From handing over quality homes, to engaging with the community, to unveiling new plans and winning awards, it’s been a successful and satisfying year.
“Our one-year celebration was a sociable way to mark all that’s been achieved and of course it was an opportunity for some of our new residents who have moved in over the past 12 months to meet up and get to know each other better. We are looking forward to another successful year ahead.”
The first year as a growing community began and ended with awards, as Site Manager George Robertson has just been awarded a Pride in the Job Quality Award by the National House Building Council (NHBC) for the excellence of his work, having won the same prize last year.
In September last year the development also won the Best Partnership award at the First Time Buyer Awards. The category highlights collaborations that deliver quality and affordable homes for first-time buyers.
The first 22 affordable homes within the first phase of construction were handed over to their new residents in November last year, with 49 affordable homes now occupied. The first open spaces have also been completed.
The developers have also built on connections with the community throughout the last 12 months. Local primary schools Cherry Hinton CofE, Teversham CofE, Bewick Bridge and The Spinney visited last summer to find out about the archaeology of the site, following excavations carried out by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU), part of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge.
In December, Bellway Latimer sponsored the inaugural Cherry Hinton and Springstead Community Christmas Tree Festival. It paid for 25 large trees to be displayed at the week-long event at St Andrew’s Church. It also organised a collection point at Springstead Village so that residents could donate presents for local children to go under the trees, as well as holding a festive gathering at the site for residents to enjoy.
In May, students from Cambridge’s Rowan arts centre for adults with learning disabilities were invited to the development to gain inspiration for their latest creative artworks. The students were shown around, and they completed sketches of the houses, sales office and green open spaces.
The local community has also continued to help shape plans for forthcoming phases of the development. In March, detailed plans were submitted for a local centre at Springstead Village to include shops and a community hub as well as a new phase of 292 homes with green space, parks and allotments, following extensive public consultation and input from local residents.
Last month, the developers also unveiled plans for a nature-inspired public art project designed with input from local young people. The artworks will be inspired by the concept of hedgerows tying communities and land together.
There’s currently a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes available to reserve at Springstead Village, with a range of apartments, maisonettes, coach houses, and house styles. Prices start from £299,995 for a one-bedroom apartment.
