Bellway funds transport projects as part of £8 million package for Bristol area

More than £8 million of investment is to be made in the Bristol area as part of two new housing developments which are being built by Bellway.

As well as supporting general infrastructure projects identified by local councils, funding from the housebuilder is also going towards a range of specific transport improvements including an outbound bus lane on the A4 Bath Road and traffic lights and pedestrian crossings on the A4018.

Bellway is building 409 homes at Berwick Green in Cribbs Causeway and 160 homes at Flowers Hill Grange in Brislington. The funding is part of the planning agreements for the two developments, made with South Gloucestershire Council and Bristol City Council respectively.

Both the A4 Bristol to Bath road and the A37/A4018 are transport corridors identified for walking, cycling and public transport improvements by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority as part of its vision for a greener, better connected transport network.

Bellway South West Senior Sales Manager Rachel Way said: “The majority of the funding we are providing for both developments will support improvements to infrastructure such as schools, roads and community facilities, with a combined total of more than £8 million provided directly to the local councils through the roof tax or Community Infrastructure Levy.

“Additional funding will go to specific projects, which include better and more sustainable transport links across the area.

“This includes funding for a bus lane, traffic light junctions and pedestrian crossings, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, and support for the Smarter Choices initiative which aims to cut car use by enhancing the alternatives.

“It all adds to the sustainability of the city and of the developments we are creating. It will contribute to making getting about easier for us all, which is good news for everyone.”

The largest portion of the money is linked to Berwick Green, where Bellway is contributing more than £7.2 million through the planning agreement.

Bellway is currently building 256 homes in its first phase, with a second phase of 153 homes planned as part of a wider new neighbourhood of 760 properties.

As well as a roof tax payment of £6.98 million, Bellway is providing additional contributions towards specific projects totalling around £300,000.

Specific transport projects to benefit from funding include:

Meanwhile, Bellway’s Flowers Hill Grange development in the Brislington area of Bristol will provide 160 new homes made up of one and two-bedroom apartments and two to four-bedroom houses.

Payments linked to Flowers Hill Grange, where work started last year, total more than £1.1 million.

The total includes a £1 million payment to Bristol City Council through the Community Infrastructure Levy, as well as funding of £140,000 through the planning agreement allocated for specific projects, including:
