Bellway site manager in Fradley wins coveted industry award

The site manager at Bellway’s Sheasby Park development in Fradley near Lichfield has been recognised for the quality of his work with a prestigious national award.

Marc Franks, 38, from Sutton Coldfield, has secured a Quality Award in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) annual Pride in the Job competition.

He was among only 450 winners selected from a pool of more than 8,000 site managers whose developments have been inspected by the NHBC over the past year, placing him among an elite group within the industry.

This is the third Pride in the Job Quality Award that Marc has won during his 13 years as a site manager.

Marc began his career as an apprentice bricklayer at the age of 17 and progressed to a trainee assistant site manager position, followed by an assistant site manager role before being promoted to site manager.

Bellway is building 624 new homes at Sheasby Park on the former RAF Lichfield site. Work started there in 2016, with work now taking place on the third phase of the development.

Marc said: “I actually had an NHBC inspector with me conducting a Construction Quality Review, which is not related to the Pride in the Job judging process, when I got the email to tell me I had won again. I shared the good news with my construction director Nick Edmond and contracts manager James Bridges then went out onto the site to tell the team. Everyone was delighted that all the hard work we had put in had been rewarded.

“It’s all about teamwork to be honest. My assistant site managers Richard Armstrong and Phil Bower have been great for me. I can delegate a job to them and know that it will be done as well as I could do it. That allows me to be able to focus on other aspects of the build programme that might need my full attention.

“We got the Quality Award here in 2022 then missed out in 2023 but claimed it back for 2024 so it was satisfying to retain it for the first time. On site here it’s like one big family which is perhaps the secret of our success as we all pull together and if there’s an issue we talk it out, find a solution, learn from it and move on positively.”

The Pride in the Job awards involve a rigorous process including spot checks on the day-to-day running of a site. Each site manager is assessed across six key areas which are consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.

Marc and the other Quality Award winners will go forward to the next stage of the competition – the NHBC’s Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards, which will be announced this autumn.

Nick Edmond, Construction Director for Bellway West Midlands, said: “As you can see from the number of sites that are judged nationally, winning this award is no mean feat. The NHBC Quality Award is recognition of a job very well done and is universally respected throughout the construction industry as a mark of distinction.

"Marc and his site team should be incredibly proud of this achievement. It is a real testament to their hard work, commitment and attention to detail not to mention the extremely high standards that we set for ourselves throughout the business.”
