Homebuilder donates bird boxes and bug and hedgehog hotels to Undy Primary School

Undy Primary School has been given bird boxes and bug and hedgehog hotels for its Forest School by homebuilder Bellway.

The company, which is building homes five miles from the school at its Alder Grove development on the outskirts of Newport, donated the items to support the children’s learning about their environment and promote biodiversity in the school grounds.

The school, on Pennyfarthing Lane in Undy, has its own area of woodland within its grounds which is used for outdoor learning and Forest School sessions. The donated items will be put in place there in the spring.

Reception teacher Bec Summers, who also runs the school’s Eco Council, said: “This donation from Bellway is much appreciated as these items will enhance the Forest School area. Funding is tight in our school, so we do rely on donations for things like this.

“We have amazing school grounds and pupils use the Forest School area at least once a week. We have Forest School-trained staff, so the children have the chance to learn about things like building and managing a campfire.

We have done the RSPB bird watch, and we go bug hunting and the older classes do den building.

“We do things related to the seasons so if it’s a frosty day, we go down to have a look and, in the spring, we go and see what’s growing.

“The children get to see the changes all year round. They see the leaves fall and it all growing in the summer and it helps them understand the importance of looking after the environment.”

Bellway Wales Sales Manager Rhodri Davies said: “The children at Undy Primary School are very lucky to have such a wonderful Forest School area within the grounds where they can learn all about biodiversity, sustainability and looking after the environment all year round.

“We hope our gift of bug and hedgehog hotels and bird boxes encourages lots of wildlife in the Forest School area and provides memorable opportunities for the pupils to learn about them.

“Improving biodiversity is an important part of our work as a housebuilder, and this is something we’re seeing at Alder Grove, where the regeneration of the site includes the planting of new trees and the creation of green corridors.”

The Eco Council will tell the rest of the school about the bird boxes and bug and hedgehog hotels at a school assembly.
