Lynne calls Bristol home as she buys Bellway house at Berwick Green

After moving from Scotland to work in Bristol seven years ago, Lynne Backhouse took some time before deciding that the South West had become her home.

But having made that decision, Lynne, 42, has left her rented flat and bought a house at Bellway’s Berwick Green development at Cribbs Causeway on the edge of the city.

Lynne, who works in corporate communication for the non-profit business group the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), moved to Bristol from Edinburgh, having grown up in the Cairngorms.

She said: “Deciding to buy a place was finally the decision to commit to stay. Most of my friendship group is here. I play golf here and have a social circle – and the weather tends to be better down here!

“Bristol feels like home, so it was time to properly set down my roots, although it’s great to go back to Scotland to visit whenever I can.”

Lynne moved into her three-bedroom semi-detached Turner house at the end of May and took on another commitment at the same time – a puppy called Haggis, who is 15 weeks old.

Her new home has an open-plan living/dining room with French doors leading out to the garden and a separate kitchen. It was the downstairs layout that particularly attracted Lynne.

She said: “I love how light and airy it is. With the heatwaves we have had this summer, I’ve had the double doors out to the garden open most of the time.”

As Lynne works from home, having a dedicated room to use as an office was important to her.

She said: “I was renting a one-bedroom flat, and I knew I wanted at least two bedrooms. Really what I wanted was a spare room plus a home office.

“I was working from the dining table before. Now I can work in the office and shut it off when I’m finished. I can have friends to stay and not have work things out. It’s so much nicer having extra space.”

In Scotland, Lynne had previously owned her own home and had experience of both an older property and a new build. This time, she was keen to buy a new-build home to avoid the possibility of needing the kind of repairs that often come with older properties. She looked at other developments but was impressed with the quality of the Bellway homes.

She said: “The finish on these houses seemed a lot higher and that’s what swayed me here: better build quality and fixtures and fittings. They all seemed nicer than in some of the other showhomes.”

Lynne likes the layout of the development and the inclusion of green open spaces – and its location suits her. It is near to the retail area at Cribbs Causeway as well as coffee shops and restaurants. Clifton Down and Blaise Castle are within easy reach and the M5 is five minutes away when she needs to go further afield.

As someone who works in the world of emissions reduction, Lynne was pleased to see that her home had solar panels and an electric vehicle charging point fitted as standard. “That was a huge bonus to me as it’s all extra hassle if you have to do all that yourself. It’s a benefit I think all new builds should have,” she said.

Lynne valued the customer service from sales advisors Louise, Julie and Carly. She said: “From start to finish Louise and the team in the sales office were fantastic any time I had a question – and I had a lot. They were happy to help with questions about the selections process, and overall, made the purchase as smooth as it could be.”

Lynne appreciated how the site team regularly sent build update pictures, as well as when they showed her around the house. Before she moved in, they explained how everything was built and how it all worked.  “They were so thorough,” she said.

There’s currently a choice of two, three and four-bedroom houses available to reserve at Berwick Green, with prices starting from £413,000.
